N.C. Vital Records can assist with changes to a birth or death certificate. Our office does not handle changes to marriage or divorce certificates. For marriage certificate changes or replacements, contact the county register of deeds where the marriage license was issued.

North Carolina Vital Records is implementing the N.C. Database Application for Vital Events (NCDAVE) system to transition from paper to electronic death records. The Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS) is a secure, web-based, statewide online system used to electronically register death certificates.

Vital Records Vital records (births/deaths) were not kept in North Carolina on a statewide basis before October 1913. For most counties, microfilm indexes of births and deaths (1913+) are available to researchers who visit the State Archives of North Carolina. Individuals born anywhere in the state of North Carolina from 1971 to the present may now obtain a copy of a certified birth certificate at the Mecklenburg County Vital Records Office. Cost for the service is $24.00 and includes researching the certificate in the North Carolina state registry and one copy of the certificate.
